DETAILS

Help us honor Jupiter Hammon, America’s first published Black poet. Hammon authored works that grappled with the same democratic ideals debated by our nation’s Founding Fathers while enslaved by the Lloyd family. His rare perspective offers powerful insights into the experience of being enslaved in a “free” country. By voicing Hammon’s vision for the future, his writings remain a powerful call for Americans to insist that the nation fulfills its promises of liberty and justice for all. On Sunday, October 18th, join us for a viewing of Malik Work's short film interpreting Jupiter Hammon's "An Essay on Slavery." After seeing the film, Malik Work will speak about Jupiter Hammon's life and work, his experience making the film, and Hammon's lasting legacy. After the talk, attendees can watch a screening of a panel discussion, which featured Malik Work alongside filmmakers William “GoodWill” Ellis and Aanika Allen. The panel was recorded in 2022 and was moderated by Professor Douglas A. Jones Jr. Joseph Lloyd Manor will also be open for self-guided tours.
